In today's world, community security is always both a concern and a priority – particularly in the Jewish community. The Federation recognized the critical need to protect our people and institutions, and created a brand-new position to oversee security for our whole community. Pittsburgh is one of only a handful of communities around the country to create such a position. Federation funding makes this position possible, and provides this resource to the entire community at no charge. In early 2017, Brad Orsini became the first Director of Jewish Community Security in Pittsburgh. A 28-year veteran of the FBI, Brad is now responsible assessing and ensuring the security of all of our Jewish community organizations.

Since his hiring, Brad has organized safety trainings and coordinated activities relating to the protection and security of the Jewish Federation and of Pittsburgh’s Jewish community organizations, including day schools, synagogues and Jewish communal organizations. The mission of the Communal Security Program is to create a culture of security within the Greater Pittsburgh area and empower everyone to become a "First Responder."

In 2017, his first year, Brad has:

  • Completed 54 situational security related training sessions for 2,200 individuals.
  • Initiated and developed a FEMA-certified Community Emergency Response Team.
  • Conducted assessments and helped develop emergency operations plans for more than 25 organizations.
  • Developed and conducted training and drills for those organizations as a follow-up to the assessments.
  • Responded to more than 50 reported incidents that were concerning to organizations and community members, leading to the initiation of several law enforcement cases.
